HERBAL SPOTLIGHT: BACOPA MONNIERA In Ayurvedic medicine we have used a number of herbs to enhance the learning process and memory. These herbs are called medhya rasayan. The literal meaning of medhya means to enhance the intelligence of the person and rasayan means rejuvenator or adaptogen. Bacopa monniera is one of the most popular medhya rasayan and is prescribed as a brain tonic and also as a treatment for mental disorders. For medicinal purposes extracts of bacopa monnierra are standardized for bacopasides and have been shown to exert a remarkable effect on neurotransmitters. Bacopa Monniera: Bacopa monniera is a small creeping herb commonly growing in marshy areas throughout India up to 2,000 feet above sea level. It can be easily grown in damp areas and can be propagated by seed or cuttings. In Ayurvedic medicine it is considered astringent, bitter, cooling and is known to improve the intellect. Also it has been used for the treatment of asthma, hoarseness, insanity, and epilepsy. It is a potent neurotonic, cardiotonic, diuretic, adaptogen and tranquilizer. The leaves are used as a diuretic and is also given to children for bronchitis and diarrhea. A paste made out of the leaves is also used as a remedy for rheumatism. Bacopa contains alkaloids brahmine, herpestin, and is highly toxic when administered at doses of 0.5 mg per kg of body weight. Although its presence is very low in bacopa the chemical action of these alkaloids resembles strichnine and lowers blood pressure. The herb also contains saponins called bacopasides which have very potent medicinal properties. Bacopa also contains D-mannitol, betulic acid, beta sitosterol, stigmasterol, octacosane, nicotine, and amino acids like alpha alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and serine. In one experimental study, animals were individually
trained in a simple T- maze until they reached a predetermined level of performance.
Following optimum training they were divided into different groups. Group one was a
control group in which no medication was given. Group 2 was treated with diazapalm (Valium). Groups 3, 4, & 5 were treated with 50% bacopasides (Bacopa
Plus™), water soluble extract and whole extract of bacopa. The experiment was
continued for ten days. On the tenth day the activity of the animals in the experiment was
evaluated by repeating the T- maze trial in which they were trained before starting the
experiment. Animals given Bacopa Plus showed remarkable learning and memory enhancement as
compared to control and other groups. Also, the biochemical studies
showed that the neurochemical content of the brain tissue collected from the animals given
Bacopa Plus showed an increase in the level of serotonin content in the group as compared
to the control and other group. This has remarkable clinical applications. In another study 169 patients with irritable bowel syndrome were given
a bacopa preparation in a placebo controled study. The patients given bacopa experienced
considerable improvement (65% as compared to 33% in the placebo control group). Another study notes that the nociceptiv response is decreased after using bacopa. The nociceptiv response is pain due to hypersensitive nerve endings and can be either a somatic or viseral condition which is usually associated with cancer pain. This means that Bacopa Plus may be useful for patients diagnosed with cancer. Bacopa Plus is also known for its tranquilizing effects. Overall Bacopa Plus has proved to be a remarkable adaptogen, tranquilizer, brain tonic, and antidepressant with virtually no side effects. When patients are prescribed barbiturates, bacopa may potentiate the
effect of barbiturates so they may lower their doses. So if you are a patient with
epilepsy it can be combined with barbiturate therapy and thereby reduce barbiturate
intake. Bacopa Plus can induce a general feeling of well being, and bring relief from
sleeplessness, anxiety, nervousness, palpitation, nervous dyspepsia, irritability, lack of
concentration, mental fatigue, and can improve your ability to learn and remember more
efficiently. Bacopa monniera: Bacopa actions include neuroleptic, antitumor, immunostimulant, antibacterial, anticonvulsant, antimycobacterial, antispasmodic, antiviral, cholinesterase inhibition, CNS depressant, convulsant, spasmogenic, tranquilizing, hypotensive, hypothermic, antihistamine, antipyretic, chronotropic effect positive, anesthetic, barbiturate potentiation, neuromuscular blocking, & psychotropic. The herb contains the saponins, monnierin (C51H82O213H2O, mp 262-63º); hersaponin [ mp 232 - 34º (decomp.)], bacoside A [C41H68O134H2O, mp 250º (decomp.)], and bacoside B [C41H68O135H2O, mp 203º (decomp.)]. Monnierin, on hyrolisis, gave glucose, arabinose and an aglycone (C30H48O4, m p 235-37º). Whereas, bacosides A and B gave glucose, arabinose and bacogenins A1,A2,A3, and A4. Bacogens A1 and A2 are apimers, and A4 is an ebelin lactone. Smith-de Mayo degradation of bacoside A gave jujubogenin and pseudojujubogenin. Bacosides A and B possess haemolytic activity. Other constituents present in the plant are D-mannitol, betulic acid, B-sitosterol, stigmasterol; and its esters, heptacosane, octacosane, nonacosane, triacontane, hentriacontane, dotriacontane, nicotine, 3-formyl-4-hydroxy-2H-pyran (C6H6O3), luteolin, and its 7-glucoside. The presence of a-alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and serine has also been reported. Ashwagandha: Pharmacological research shows that ashwagandha is both an adaptogen and an immune system modulator. It also has antistress, anti-epileptic, cytoprotective, tumoricidal, emmanagogic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, sedative, anti-bacterial, antifungal, and amebecidal activity. Primary contituents include alkaloids, steroidal lactones, and especially withanolides.anti-inflamatory, & diuretic properties and increases blood circulation. Centella Asiatica: The presence of isobramic acid, betulic acid, valerine, pectic acid, fatty acids, tannins, ascorbic acid, hydocotyline (an alkaloid) & asiaticoside (a glycoside) have been well documented. Centella Asiatica has been compared to Bacopa moniera and has similar properties such as nervine activity, cardiac, anti-inflammatory, diuretic properties and increases blood circulation. Convolvulus Pleuricaulis: Has calming and diuretic effects. n-Tetracontane, n-octacosanol and B-sitosterol have been isolated. This plant also yields the alkloid sankhpuspine. Ginkgo Biloba: Active constituents include Ginkgo flavone glycosides (bioflavonoids) and terpene lactones; ginkgolides and bilobalide. Increases circulation to brain and extremities, inhibits platelet stickiness, regulates tone and elasticity of blood vessels. Leaves will begin to change color adding their rich splendor to the season. Then trees will start to lose their leaves and slowly cooler weather will remind us that fall has arrived. During the summer months pita energy is accumulated and is easily aggravated if proper care is not taken. In this season light foods are advisable. The lighter the food the greater is the power of digestion. In this season foods of sweet, cold and bitter nature are recommended, but avoid any over indulgence. Avoid very heavy foods like beef, dairy products and fried foods. Poultry like quail and partridge are recommended. Meat such as deer, sheep and rabbit is preferable during this season. Of the grains, rice, barley, and wheat are the best choices for fall. Bitter vegetables like kale, chard, lettuce, spinach, dandelion, swiss chris, are also recommended. You must avoid sun bathing, fats, oils, meats of aquatic and marsh animals and excessive yogurt. Do not sleep during the day time, and wear appropriate clothing in the early and late hours of the day.
This is one of the best seasons for cleansing. Panch Karma can be performed to cleanse the whole body. For a shorter cleansing regimen, one to two days of fasting on vegetable and fruit juice followed by purging with castor oil or olive oil is useful, but do not do this without consulting with your doctor. A milder form of purging can be done with Haritaki, Trifal™, and Easylax™ taken on a regular basis for one to two weeks followed by light foods. In general, fall is a season for shedding - shed your grief, bad
habits, enmity and bring the loving calmness of mother nature into your life. NOW AVAILABLE AT RETAIL OUTLETS! What Is a Vaccination? In simple terms it is the prevention of disease by asdministering a weakened form of the disease causing germ which could be bacteria, virus etc. Most often these weakened germs when administered by injection would cause a sort of reactive mini-disease - which is called an immune response. This response is intended to protect the body against that particular disease for a long period of time - varying from months to a lifetime. Most of us have the assumption that every single vaccination should be 100% efficacious. There are however factors that can affect the production of antibodies and immunity such as breed, age (too young or too old), sick, weak, malnourished, mutant germ strains, stress, toxicity, worm infestation, immuno compromised animals due to drugs like cortisone, diseases like feline luekemia, feline immunodeficiency virus, (FIV) and so on. Possible side effects of Vaccinations. There is always a chance that a vaccine may not prove effective in providing immunity completely. A most commonly reported side effect immediatley seen can be a lump at the site of the injection, post vaccination reactions like vomiting, fever, respiratory distress, hives, facial edema and a more rarely seen a shock like syndrome leading to collapse and death. Most holistic veterinarians and homeopaths describe the above symptoms due to vaccine reaction called vaccinosis. I still recommend vaccination of animals but at a little older age of around 10 - 12 weeks and to do a single vaccination per visit. Though this could mean more trips to your veterinarian, the long term effects can be wonderful. Vaccinating completely indoor cats and dogs is left up to the owners discretion. Rabies vaccination is required by the law due to the seriousness of the condition. People should adhere to their state requirements without reservation.
